Remarks: |
NGC 6744 is one of the largest galaxies in the southern sky in terms of area. Its extension reaches 20′ in north-south direction. It is classified as an SAB(r)bc spiral, which according to current knowledge corresponds to the galaxy type of our Milky Way. This is why NGC 6744 is also referred to as its twin. Bright red emission nebulae mark its spiral arms. In the northwest, a spiral arm crosses the irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 6744A. An image of the same galaxy but with 5x the focal length, done 20 years before with Ganymed, can be found here. |

Bemerkungen: |
NGC 6744 gehört zu
den flächenmäßig größten Galaxien am Südhimmel. Ihre Ausdehnung erreicht in
Nord-Süd-Richtung 20′. Sie wird als SAB(r)bc-Spirale klassifiziert, was nach
aktuellem Kenntnisstand dem Galaxientyp unserer Milchstraße entspricht.
Deshalb wird NGC 6744 auch als deren Zwilling bezeichnet. Helle rote
Emissionsnebel markieren ihre Spiralarme. Im Nordwesten kreuzt ein Spiralarm
die irreguläre Zwerggalaxie NGC 6744A. |
