NGC 6221 is configured asymetrically, possibly due to a close encounter with the galaxy NGC 6215, located 25 arcminutes northwards. Striking is the great number of foreground stars, as it can also be seen at NGC 5643. The reason is the low galactic latitude of only 10°, close to the so-called "zone of avoidance" . Within this zone dense clouds of dust in the outskirts of our home galaxy dim the light of far objects significantly, resulting in areas where galaxies can´t be seen at all.

NGC 6221 ist asymmetrisch konfiguriert, möglicherweise nach einem nahen Vorübergang an NGC 6215, die 25 Bogenminuten weiter nördlich steht. Auffällig ist hier, wie auch bei NGC 5643 die große Zahl an Vordergrundsternen. Dies liegt an der niedrigen galaktischen Breite. NGC 6221 steht nur 10° südlich des galaktischen Äquators, nahe der „Zone of Avoidance“, innerhalb der die Staubwolken unserer Milchstraße das Licht weiter entfernter Objekte schlucken, so dass in bestimmten Bereichen überhaupt keine Galaxien mehr zu finden sind.
