Remarks:

This image is the last image for now that was taken with our 24" hypergraph Ganymed on Crete. The Skinakas Observatory is getting a new telescope and the dome is needed for this. But we are already working together on a new home for Ganymed. The exposures were taken "last minute". Four hours later, the telescope had already been partially dismantled.
IC 342 is a rather large galaxy in the constellation Camelopardalis. It is a wonderful barred spiral galaxy that we can see face on. The yellow/brown coloration is striking. The reason for this is the relative position of the galaxy in space. From our point of view, the galaxy lies in the plane of the Milky Way, where dust and gas swallow the light of the galaxy behind it. As red light is less absorbed than short-wave blue light, the galaxy appears reddened. For this reason, IC342 bears the trivial name “Hidden Galaxy”.

Bemerkungen:

Dieses Bild ist das vorerst letzte Bild, welches mit unserem 24" Hypergraphen Ganymed auf Kreta entstanden ist. Das Skinakas-Observatorium bekommt ein neues Teleskop und dafür wird die Kuppel benötigt. Wir arbeiten aber bereits gemeinsam an einer neuen Heimat für Ganymed. Die Belichtungen erfolgten quasi "in letzter Minute". Vier Stunden später war das Teleskop bereits teilweise abgebaut.
IC 342 ist eine recht große Galaxie im Sternbild Giraffe. Es ist eine wundervolle Balkenspiralgalaxie, die wir Face On sehen. Auffällig ist die gelb/braune Färbung. Grund dafür ist die relative Lage der Galaxie im Raum. Von unserem Standpunkt aus liegt die Galaxie in der Ebene der Milchstraße, wo Staub und Gas das Licht der dahinter liegendend Galaxie schluckt. Da rotes Licht weniger geschluckt wird als kurzwelliges blaues Licht, erscheint die Galaxie gerötet. Aus diesem Grund trägt IC342 den Trivialnamen "Versteckte Galaxie".
