The image
shows the irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 6822 in the constellation Sagittarius,
also known as Barnard’s Galaxy. Edward Emerson Barnard discovered it in
1884. At that time, Barnard was not yet a professional astronomer but
observed the night sky with a 6-inch refractor – an instrument quite
comparable to what today’s amateur astronomers might use. Only later did
Barnard gain worldwide recognition as an astronomer. |

Das Bild zeigt die irreguläre Zwerggalaxie
NGC 6822 im Sternbild Schütze, die auch als Barnards Galaxie bekannt ist.
Edward Emerson Barnard entdeckte sie im Jahr 1884. Zu dieser Zeit war
Barnard noch kein professioneller Astronom, sondern beobachtete den
Sternenhimmel mit einem 6-Zoll-Refraktor – also mit einem Instrument, das
durchaus mit heutigen Amateurteleskopen vergleichbar ist. Erst später
erlangte Barnard weltweiten Ruhm als Astronom. |
