In addition to the two "main galaxies" NGC 5557 at the top left and NGC 5529
at the bottom right, the picture shows three other NGCs: The face-on galaxy
of the couple above the center of the picture is NGC 5544, the second of the
couple is NGC 5545, both together are also known as Arp 199. The galaxy below the right end of NGC 5529 is NGC 5527. Interesting are the tidal streams at PGC 2076843 (a little to the left of NGC 5529, see e.g. here) and of course the shell structure of NGC 5557. NGC 5557 was mentioned by Lord Rosse in 1850. Along with 15 others the galaxy was identified as "spiral". He was right about every of them except NGC 5557. NGC 5557 was the only one on its list that is not a spiral galaxy (see e.g. here). |

Das Bild zeigt außer den beiden "Hauptgalaxien" NGC 5557 oben links und NGC
5529 unten rechts drei weitere NGCs: Bei der Face-On Galaxie des Pärchens
Bildmitte oben handelt es sich um NGC 5544, die zweite des Pärchens ist NGC
5545, beide zusammen sind auch als Arp 199 bekannt. Bei der Galaxie unterhalb des rechten Endes von NGC 5529 handelt es sich NGC 5527. Interessant sind die Gezeitenströme bei PGC 2076843 (etwas links von NGC 5529, siehe z.B. hier) und natürlich die Schalenstruktur von NGC 5557. NGC 5557 wurde übrigens 1850 von Lord Rosse erwähnt. Dort wird die Galaxie zusammen mit 15 weiteren als "spiralförmig" identifiziert. Bei allen außer NGC 5557 sollte er Recht behalten. NGC 5557 war die einzige in seiner Liste, bei der es sich nicht um eine Spiralgalaxie handelt (siehe z.B. hier). |
