Remarks:

To the right of center, the field is dominated by the two galaxies NGC 5142 and NGC 5143, which were discovered by William Herschel in 1785. According to the Hubble classification, both galaxies belong to type S0. This is the type where the classification tuning fork splits into the branch with spiral galaxies and the branch with barred spirals. At the bottom left is PGC 46959, also known as UGC 8440. With its seven widely spread spiral arms, it reminds us very much of the head of Medusa, although the trivial name “Medusa Galaxy” has already been given to NGC 4194, which we think is less appropriate.

Bemerkungen:

Rechts der Mitte wird das Feld von den beiden Galaxien NGC 5142 und NGC 5143 beherrscht, die Wilhelm Herschel im Jahr 1785 entdeckte. Beide Galaxien gehören nach der Hubble-Klassifikation dem Typ S0 an. Das ist der Typ, bei dem sich die Klassifikations-Stimmgabel gerade in den Ast mit den Spiralgalaxien und den Ast mit den Balkenspiralen aufteilt. Links unten befindet sich PGC 46959, auch UGC 8440 genannt. Mit ihren sieben weit ausgespannten Spiralarmen erinnert sie uns sehr an das Haupt der Medusa, obwohl der Trivialname „Medusa-Galaxie”, durchaus weniger passend, bereits an NGC 4194 vergeben wurde.
