NGC 1291 is also cataloged as NGC 1269. James Dunlop discovered this galaxy in 1826 and Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer entered it as NGC 1291 into the NGC cataloge. John Herschel discovered the object again in 1836 and Dreyer put it into the NGC cataloge as NGC 1269, without noticing the identity. The class of galaxies characterized by a bar across the central region was first recognized by H.D.Curtis, who assigned to the provisional name Ø-Spirals. Image processed with DDP. |

NGC 1291 ist auch als NGC 1269 katalogisiert. James Dunlop hat die Galaxie im Jahre 1826 entdeckt und Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer hat sie als NGC 1291 aufgenommen. John Herschel hat das Objekt im Jahre 1836 dann noch einmal entdeckt. Dreyer hat es anschließend, ohne die Identität zu bemerken, als NGC 1269 aufgenommen. Die Klasse von Galaxien, die durch einen Balken quer durch die Zentralregion gekennzeichnet ist, wurde als erstes von H. D. Curtis erkannt und erhielt von ihm den provisorischen Namen Ø-Spiralgalaxie. Das Bild wurde mit Hilfe von DDP bearbeitet. |
