The animation shown is composed of three recordings that were made in July 2011 (background image), at the end of August 2011 and in June 2023. The square on the top right shows the supernova SN2011fe (August 2011), which was not visible in July 2011. The bottom center square shows supernova 2023ixf, which appeared in spring 2023. At this point, there was nothing more to be seen of SN2011fe.
Supernovae are relatively rare events. It is assumed that in our Milky Way, on average, one evolves every hundred years. The fact that M101 featured two in just 12 years can simply be a coincidence. On the other hand, the morphology and size of a galaxy also have an impact on the rate at which supernovae form.

Die dargestellte Animation setzt sich aus drei Aufnahmen zusammen, die im Juli 2011 (Hintergrundbild) sowie Ende August 2011 und im Juni 2023 entstanden. Dabei zeigt das Quadrat rechts oben die Supernova SN2011fe (August 2011), die im Juli 2011 noch nicht zu sehen war. Das Quadrat in der Mitte unten zeigt die Supernova 2023ixf, die Im Frühjahr 2023 auftauchte. Von SN2011fe war zu diesem Zeitpunkt nichts mehr zu sehen.
Supernovae sind relativ seltene Ereignisse. Man geht davon aus, dass sich in unserer Milchstraße im Mittel eine in einhundert Jahren entwickelt. Dass in M101 innerhalb von gerade einmal 12 Jahren gleich zwei zu sehen waren, kann schlicht Zufall sein. Andererseits haben aber auch die Morphologie und die Größe einer Galaxie Einfluss auf die Entstehungsrate von Supernovae.
