Remarks:

 V838 Monocerotis is a variable super giant star (the red star in the center of the ring) which emits a sphere of material, that is actually (March 2004) nearly 6 light years in diameter. The light and the light flashes of the star are reflected by the material and are seen as a light echo. Based on a projection effect the speed of light traveling through the material seems to be faster than light. Even compared with the HST image of V838 done on February, 8th 2004 (six weeks before ours) you can see some differences.

 

 

Bemerkungen:

V838 Monocerotis ist ein variabler Überriesenstern (der rötliche Stern in der Mitte des Ringes), der eine Kugel aus Staub ausstößt, die inzwischen (März 2004) ca. 6 Lichtjahre Durchmesser hat . Die von ihm ausgehende Strahlung ist auf der Erde als Lichtecho zu sehen. Das Licht (und die Lichtausbrüche) des Zentralsternes wird am Staub reflektiert und durch einen Projektionseffekt scheint sich das Lichtecho mit Überlichtgeschwindigkeit auszubreiten. Selbst zu der erst am 08. Februar 2004, also ca. sechs Wochen vorher gemachten Aufnahme durch Hubble sind bereits wieder kleine Veränderungen festzustellen.
