Even though it looks, as if the image is most dense in the red area, a closer look shows that the opposite is true: through the red area a huge number of stars of the milky way can be seen. As a result of the low density in this area the stars in the middle are able to activate the luminance of the surrounding gas (mainly Ha emission).

The two reflection nebulas at the right part of the image have a very contrasting nature. Here the nebula is so dense, that the light of the stars is reflected.

Obwohl es aussieht, als wäre das Bild in den roten Gebieten am dichtesten, kann man bei genauerem Hinsehen feststellen, dass genau das Gegenteil der Fall ist. In den roten Gebieten sind durch den Nebel hindurch eine große Anzahl von Sternen der Milchstrasse zu sehen. Aufgrund der geringen Dichte in diesem Bereich können die hellen Sterne in der Mitte ihn zum Leuchten anregen - deswegen die rote Farbe (im wesentlichen Ha-Emission).

Ganz im Gegensatz hierzu stehen die beiden Reflexionsnebel im rechten Teil des Bildes. Hier ist der Nebel so dicht, dass die Reflexion des Sternenlichtes an den Nebelteilchen sichtbar wird.
