Messier 17 has many names. Swan Nebula, Omega Nebula
or Horseshoe Nebula. It is a classic gas nebula of our Milky Way whose
bright red color comes from ionized hydrogen. Young, hot stars inside the
nebula, so-called O-type stars, are responsible for this. Radiation from
these stars also shapes the filamentary structures in the eastern part of
the nebula. A bluish shimmer that surrounds the entire nebula is also
clearly visible. Here the blue light of the O stars is scattered by the
interstellar matter. |

Bemerkungen: |
Messier 17 hat viele Trivialnamen. Schwanennebel, Omeganebel oder Hufeisennebel. Es handelt sich um einen klassischen Gasnebel unserer Milchstraße dessen leuchtendes Rot durch ionisierten Wasserstoff zustande kommt. Dafür verantwortlich sind junge, heiße Sterne im inneren des Nebels, sogenannte O-Type Sterne. Die Strahlung dieser Sterne formt auch die filamentartigen Strukturen im östlichen Teil des Nebels. Deutlich zu erkennen ist außerdem auch ein bläulicher Schimmer der den ganzen Nebel umgibt. Hier wird das blaue Licht der O-Sterne an der interstellaren Materie gestreut.
